Language of Study: Chinese

What I can share with students: Hi, I’m Bái Chǔ Rán, also known as Char. I started at UW-Madison in 2023, and I am pursuing degrees in Chinese Language and Creative Writing, along with certificates in Learning to Teach Abroad and TESOL. My favorite class was Asian 375, Survey of Chinese Film. I loved experiencing Chinese cinema from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong through different historical and cultural perspectives. The best part is that you don’t need to know Chinese to take the course! This class inspired me to explore culture through language. I studied Simplified Chinese in Shanghai in 2025 and Traditional Chinese in Taipei in 2026. My Fulbright-Taiwan internship also gave me a deeper perspective on Taiwanese culture, language, research, and professional life. I’m learning Chinese because I’m passionate about the culture and love writing the characters. My goals are to teach English abroad, write books, and peer mentor students, helping them reach beyond the stars, explore the world, and make a difference!

Fun fact about me: I eat slowly, and mangoes are my favorite food!
