UW-Madison’s Chinese Linguistics program is one of the leading programs in North America. Established in the 1960s, our program offers not only the M.A. degree, but the Ph.D. degree in Chinese linguistics as well. We aim to produce future educators / researchers of Chinese language and linguistics who have balanced interests and skills in both education and research.
Professor Zhang no longer accepts any graduate students at UW-Madison, we will only consider graduate students who are interested in Chinese applied linguistics such as pragmatics, second language acquisition, foreign language pedagogy or other related fields.
Advantages of studying in this program include the following:
Interdisciplinary Curriculum: This campus encourages interdisciplinary training of students through collaborations among faculty members. Consequently, many students in our program have taken relevant courses in other tracks and departments alongside our program’s curriculum. Our students regularly work with faculty affiliated with the Doctoral Program in Second Language Acquisition, Department of Linguistics or English Language and Linguistics.
Teaching Assistantship: Qualified applicants will have the opportunity to work as teaching assistants. We will provide workshops and guided supervision to train our teaching assistants in preparation for competition in the future job market.
Well-established Undergraduate Chinese Language Program: Our outstanding undergraduate program has reached international acclaim in various competitions at home and abroad. We also boast the largest and best summer study abroad program on campus.
National and International Events: UW-Madison frequently hosts regional, national and international conferences and forums in related fields, thus giving students numerous opportunities to learn from distinguished scholars from all over the world.
Strong Network of Alumni: Our graduates are actively involved in Chinese language education and linguistics research all over the world. The schools where our graduates hold positions include Columbia University, Harvard University, Princeton University, Indiana University-Bloomington, Smith College, State University of New York, Arizona State University, Middlebury College, Beloit College, Carthage College, University of Denver, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, National Chi Nan University in Taiwan, Chulalongkorn University in Thailand and Ewha Woman’s University in South Korea. This broad global network allows us the capability of developing teaching and research projects beyond the UW-Madison campus.
We look forward to your inquiries and applications.
