The Department of Asian Languages & Cultures mourns the loss of Emeritus Professor Joseph Elder. Joe came to UW-Madison in 1961, and taught in the Department of Sociology, South Asian Studies / Languages and Cultures of Asia, and Integrated Liberal Studies. Joe was also the founder and director of the College Year in India Programs — study abroad programs for UW-Madison students (and beyond) who studied South Asian Languages intensively and spent a year abroad in Nepal, and programs throughout India. A relentless activist for peace & justice Joe’s work was paramount to many local, national, and international organizations. Professor Elder’s teaching spanned more than 50 years at UW-Madison, his lessons have inspired thousands of students to broadened their horizons and deepen their understanding of languages & cultures around the world. His memorial will be on Saturday, June 21 at 11 AM, at the First Unitarian Meeting House, 900 University Bay Drive. This will be livestreamed and recorded to watch at a later date as well.
