May 4, 2018 – May 6, 2018

University of Wisconsin-Madison

The 26th annual meeting of the International Association of Chinese Linguistics (IACL-26) is an international conference, which has been held at various prestigious institutions of Asia, Europe, Australia, and North America over the past 25 years. It has become a major conference for scholars and students around the world working on various aspects of Chinese linguistics and related studies. Its 2018 annual conference (IACL-26) will be held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison which will be its host for the 2nd time (UW-Madison was the host for IACL-4 in 1995). After 23 years, UW-Madison is happy to have this opportunity to host the annual conference for IACL again.

This year’s IACL-26 is organized and sponsored by the Department of Asian Languages & Cultures and the Center for East Asian Studies at UW-Madison, and co-sponsored by Language Institute, World Language Education Program, and Chinese Language and Culture Club at UW-Madison. The organizers have raised US$36,600.00 in total from Anonymous Fund of UW-Madison and Hanban (National Office of Promoting Chinese) in China to support the conference.

The organizing committee has received a total of more than 500 submissions of papers and abstracts. Among the submissions, there are 68 paper submissions for the Young Scholar Award (YSA) competition, the largest volume of submissions since this award was first established. Besides the paper submissions for the YSA, there are around 440 English and Chinese abstract submissions, among which, there are 144 for syntax and semantics, 50 for phonology and phonetics, 55 for historical linguistics, 26 for morphology, 15 for pragmatics, 40 for language acquisition, 24 for cognitive and functional linguistics, and 89 for other subcategories of Chinese linguistics. In addition to regular conference panels, IACL-26 will have two special panels, one on syntax-morphology interface, and the other on sign linguistics. IACL-26 has invited 9 key-note speakers and 20 invited speakers. It has also invited 50 scholars all over the world to serve at its Scientific Committee in charge of the reviewing of all the submitted papers and abstracts. The 20th International Conference on Chinese Language and Culture (ICCLC-20) will be held concurrently with IACL-26, and the organizers received 27 abstract submissions in total.

The organizing committee sent all the submissions out for anonymous review after January 10. The review process was finished on February 26, 2018 with the notifications of acceptance to IACL-26 and ICCLC-20 announced and sent to the authors. Three finalists have been selected for the YSA competition, who will be awarded a travel subsidy and invited to IACL-26 to give an oral presentation at a special session, organized for this purpose, before a panel of judges chaired by the IACL president. Among other submissions, only around 320 have been accepted for presentation due to the fierce competition and the limited resources. Now the participants are registering for IACL-26/ICCLC-20, and the deadline for early-bird pre-registration is April 6. 2018.
