Steve Ridgely spent junior year abroad on the Associated Kyoto Program at Dōshisha University (1994-95). After finishing his Japanese major at Carleton College in 1996, he spent two years in Tokyo auditing graduate courses at Waseda University (1996-98). He began a graduate program in modern Japanese literature at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1998, transfered to Yale University in 2000, and returned to Waseda for two years of dissertation research (2002-04). Before joining the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he taught for one year at Carleton College while completing his PhD from Yale (2005).
