Study Abroad Programs @ UW-Madison

International Academic Programs (IAP), in the International Division, plays a central role in the international excellence of the UW-Madison campus and community. IAP serves as a comprehensive resource for academic experiences worldwide.

IAP's Mission is to serve and support UW-Madison academic departments and other units in their internationalization strategies and goals by providing high-quality study abroad opportunities that foster academic development and personal growth in UW-Madison students.

UW-Sponsored programs within Asia

Study Abroad in China  

Students may receive resident credit for study abroad through multiple programs sponsored by the department.  Students can choose a program that runs during the summer term, fall or spring term or for the full academic year.  Programs include the CIEE Beijing Intensive Language program, the CIEE Chinese Language and Culture program, the exchange program at Tsinghua University, the summer Intensive Language program in Tianjin, the summer China History program, and the Beijing Honors program. Chinese majors are not required to study abroad, but are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities.

Study Abroad in India

Founded in 1961, this program offers an unparalleled opportunity to live and study in Varanasi, India - a city that highlights India's ethnic, religious, and linguistic diversity. UW-Madison works in partnership with CET Academic Programs to offer this exciting opportunity to both UW-Madison students and students from any U.S. university. 

Study Abroad in Japan

Students may receive resident credit for study abroad through five programs sponsored by the department: the Year or Semester Abroad Program at Kyoto Univeristy in Kyoto; the Year Abroad program at Nanzan University in Nagoya; the Year Abroad program at Hokkaido University in Sapporo; the Year or Semester Abroad program at Sophia University in Tokyo; the Year Abroad program at Keio University in Tokyo. We also offer a summer internship program at Central Japan Railway Company. Japanese majors are not required to study abroad, but are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities.

Study Abroad in Korea 

Students may receive resident credit for study abroad through programs sponsored by the department and the Center for East Asian Studies at four different universities in South Korea.  These programs include fall, spring, summer and academic year options at Ewha Woman’s University, Yonsei University, Korea University, and Pohang University of Science and Technology. 

Study Abroad in Taiwan 

Students may receive residence credit for study abroad through programs sponsored by the department and the Center for East Asian Studies at three different universities in Taipei, Taiwan.  These programs include spring, summer and academic year options at National Taiwan University, National Chengchi University and National Taiwan Normal University.

Study Abroad in Thailand

IAP coordinates three unique summer offerings for undergraduates with an interest in Public Health, Medicine, Biological Sciences, and Pre-Health. UW Global Health Field School in Thailand, UW Microbiology International Internships, UW Microbiology and Public Health in Northern Thailand.
