Research Interests:
Ying’s research centers on how everyday social interaction shapes and is reshaped by linguistic practices. She uses databanks of texts compiled from fine-grained transcriptions of natural conversations. Combining qualitative and quantitative methods, Ying explores contextualized language use not only in terms of the structure, but also how it is locally constituted and managed in social interaction. Her current projects focus on Mandarin Chinese demonstratives and demonstrative-derived discourse markers.
